Dreams and REM sleep
The key to understanding mental health
Format: Presentation & Discussion
Doors: 6.30pm
Event: 7 - 9pm
Our waking performance is only as good as our sleeping recovery. But how do dreams fit into the equation?
Dreams are not random noise. Each night, during REM sleep, the brain is doing vital work: processing emotional experience, updating our sense of reality and helping us to meet life and perceive reality in a balanced way.
Sleep is not a passive state, but is one of the most active parts of human wellbeing.
In this thoughtful and accessible talk, Ezra Hewing explores why dreams and REM sleep are so central to mental health. Drawing on Human Givens insights and the latest understanding of the dreaming brain, Ezra will unpack how sleep helps us discharge emotion, make sense of experience and restore our capacity to cope.
We will explore:
The needs behind our moral development
The evolutionary value of conscience
Navigating relationships within polarised communities
